Legend of the Galactic Heroes originated as a ten volume novel series written by Yoshiki Tanaka that ran from 1982 to 1987. It was later on adapted into this classic 110 episode animated series. The first season, which consisted of 26 episodes created in 1988 was not shown on TV due to the fact that no one knew much about the novelizations at the time and was released as a direct to video series. It would only be fully adapted to TV format a year later which than aired until 1997, consisting of four seasons.
Despite running at a long length of 110 episodes, LOGH had several more continuations, majority of which were all prequels of some sorts. There were two prequel series that ran at 24 and 28 episodes long entitled A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights, and Spiral Labyrinth, which go deeper into the back stories of Reinhard and Yang. Along with these two, a short 60 minute feature entitled Golden Wings was also created to develop the back story of Reinhard, which ultimately expanded on his ambition found in the main series. Two movies were also released that expanded upon the beginning of the series. My Conquest is the Sea of Stars depicted the first encounter between the two protagonists set before the main series and the 90 minute film Overture to a New War expanded on the first two episodes of the main series.
